Mystery surrounds Donovan signing as Oz tour continues

Although Evertonians are quietly content at the Toffees pre-season preparations so far – new deals for four first teamers as well as four new signings – the a big name arrival is still lacking.

Now England are out of the World Cup the rumour mill is slowly cranking up to full gear as the papers seek to fill column inches before the Premier League starts again next month.

Most of the stories involving Everton regard players leaving, principally Mikel Arteta, who is rumoured to be interesting Man City in a crazy money plus three player swap deal. If they are prepared to pay Yaya Toure £200,000 a week, who knows how much they would offer Arteta?

We can only hope the loyalty and team spirit found within the camp is enough to keep Arteta at the club as we certainly can’t compete financially. As we found with Lescott last year, if the player’s head is turned then we have no choice but to get rid quick, milking City for as much as possible in the process. In fact, if I were Moyes I would demand City build us a new stadium before they even got close to negotiating terms with Arteta, they seem determined to waste their money on players so I don’t see why we shouldn’t benefit from their obscene wealth too.

But the one incoming deal that is a possibility is Landon Donovan. The USA striker, back in his home land after the World Cup, pledged his loyalty to his MLS side LA Galaxy in a recent interview but, rather cryptically, left the door open to a move when he said: “As you know, I never say never to anything and, right now, rumours are rumours.

“If there’s something serious to look at, then I will but, for now, I’m very excited to be home.”

The plot thickens. Then to add the intrigue some quick thinking Evertonians in Sydney, where Everton are currently based, who accosted Phil Neville at a city centre hotel and got him to reveal that a “big signing” was set to be revealed at home.

If this is Donovan then it would be a great coup for the club. The American’s reputation has soared this year due to his successful loan spell at Goodison last winter, which dispelled the myth that he couldn’t play outside of the US, and his successful 2010 Football World Cup campaign. The Premier League betting suggests Everton will once again challenge for Europe, but we need to sign big names to keep up with out rivals.

I’m sure plenty of clubs would be keen to have Donavan on their books, but his loyalty to the Toffees after his loan spell looks set to pay dividends. His presence would be a great boost as we battle to make it into the top four once more next season.

If it’s true that Neville said this, then I think that signing will be Stephane Sessegnon of PSG his agent said that he will soon be signing for an unnamed premier league club…..and Donovan has been playing for the LA galaxy very recently

I thought Donovan was great for us but I still remember Terry Curran! I know Landon is much more gifted than Curran was but I just worry when players sign for the club after a successful loan. Even Kevin Campbell didn’t re produce the sort of form that got him a contract in the first place.

The difference with donovans loan spell was that it wasn’t through not playing at his parent club therefore playing for a move. We were essentially doing him a favour by keeping him fit for the world cup

Arteta won’t be going anywhere, apart from God forbid, back to Spain. I’ve been conned by players false commitment in the past (step forward Mr. Rooney). But Arteta seems genuine in his comments that whilst in England, he only has eyes for Everton. He has never hidden a desire to one-day return to Spain. And with complication with his son being partially-sighted, it’s been suggested that his return could be sooner than Evertonian’s would like. But I naively do not entertain the notion that City’s millions could tempt him away.
