I’d Boo This Goose

Although we’re still waiting on official confirmation from Everton FC, all other sources point to the conclusion that Dan Gosling has now left the club after taking Everton to a tribunal.  Whilst I would never blame a player for leaving for a valid reason, such as a desire to play first team football week in, week out, I also believe that there are ways and means to do things properly and from the news reports I have seen, this certainly doesn’t look like one of them. Are Everton to blame? Certainly in part for not completing the paperwork in time, but the player is the one who made the move to leave.

Seen at Finch Farm just a few days ago for ongoing treatment of his long term injury, it seems young Mr Gosling has now decided that the grass is greener on the other side and has exercised his ‘right’ to go back on his word and take his chances outside of the Everton family. I doubt that any player in his position would leave a club like Everton without having already secured a place elsewhere – so it isn’t rocket science to assume that Newcastle or Sunderland will be the club he ends up at, being as they are the two names being bandied around the most.

So will Super Danny Gosling regret his move? Obviously too early to tell what the future has in store for the lad and his options at Everton were likely to be limited when it comes to first team football. However I think he will regret the way in which this whole thing has panned out. If he joins another Premier League team and comes back to Goodison with them this season, he probably won’t be afforded the pleasant welcome we give most ex-players. There again… are Everton a worse team without him? I absolutely think not.

At least now we can concentrate on hopefully keeping the midfielders that really matter at the club for next season and beyond. Take note Mr Kenwright and co – get it all down in writing!
